I must add there were no favours. You came into the projection room, you did exactly the same work as a man. Exactly the same. The one day the chief came down and he said, "Right, we're on the roof today". "What roof?" "The canopy, we're cleaning all the fittings". Got the double extension ladder climbing up onto this canopy. This was Bristol Cinema. But you weren’t, honest to god you weren’t exempt from anything. Cleaning filters, and the fibreglass oh, we were like this all day, you know. Erm, banging them and then vacuuming them and blowing them out and everything. And oh, god the boilers. If there was an air bubble in the oil, you could forget it. You’ve got to get that air bubble out. And it was the old diesel to start with. I mean you were open to dermatitis with that stuff, you know, 'cause it was just like treacle. And you take it all apart and keep bleeding it until you think you’ve got the bubble out, reassemble it again with all the firing unit. Anyway, one time at the Orient we had a delivery of oil in the winter. Snowing like made but it wasn’t settling. And the manager said, "Whatever he's got on take it, because we don't know when we’re gonna get another lot, you know". Well I couldn’t see the gauge, couldn’t see it at all. So I said to him, "If I shout you stop pumping". He said, "Yes, okay". Well he was about 500 yards away and he was pumping away and my eyes, you know, glued to this thing. And I shouted "Stop! Stop!" Well, of course he couldn’t hear it because of the engine, and whoosh just like a gusher came straight over the top, I thought, "Oh no". So anyway he saw me waving me hand and he stopped it, but by then I mean we were up to our ankles in it. You know, and the smell in the theatre, of diesel oil. Thought, "What the hell can I do?" So right, the local butcher was two doors away from the cinema. And I said, "I’m in a bit of a dilemma here," I said, "can you help me out?" I said, "We’ve just had a delivery of oil and it's come over the top and it's all over the floor". He said, "Well how can I help you?" I said, "Have you got any sawdust?" And he said, "Have you got a box?" And I said, "Yes, a great big Butterkist box". He filled it up he did. Down I went and shovelling it all over the floor but of course as fast as I was putting it down it was just soaking it up. Then I’d got to get it out. So I went back again for another box. And he said, "I can't give you anymore after this, you know?" And I said, "Well I'll try. I’ll try it anyway". So I got out as much as I could but people were complaining about their eyes smarting, you see with the heat as well. I just didn’t know what to do. Hadn’t got a clue. And I thought well I can't do anything else. Nobody else was interested, management didn’t want to know, you know, "Oh it's your problem, you sort it out", like. Anyway, we eventually ... it did peter out, the smell but it took a while.

When I left at 14 I was mad on trains so I went to New Street Station for a job. I got one and landed in a booking office and never saw a train at all. So I packed that up, saw a slide at the Orient Astor and I thought, oh, I like this. Yes. I was always fond of reading history and geography. And films. And seeing places so I thought I’ll have a go so I was trainee number two. There was co-fourth, fourth, co-third, third, co-second. And the main one, Chief, I noticed he did nothing. And I thought, that’s worth striving for. He was never there and he never did anything wrong, you did. I thought, oh, thank god one day I’ll be chief. So I stuck it until I was promoted. Oh, because by that time I was chief, but I had to run everything, I had to do everything myself. So that thought of doing nothing didn’t apply.

They didn't have women until after the November blitz and then they started calling the men up. They asked some of us women whether we would like to try it and see if we liked it and much to their surprise or disgust, they never did tell me which, I turned out to be very good at it. You couldn't take it up you had to be picked. If you'd got nothing between your two ears like some of the usherettes hadn't I mean to say they wouldn't have been able to do anything. I was shown how to do it and within twelve months I had to be sent out on relief to help out because they were so short of staff, well I was doing chief's job but I wasn't getting chief's wages for it. Within six months I had second's wages because I turned out to be very successful. And then within the twelve months that I had done all this relief work I got the Manager to make an appointment with him and he said he would be along to see me, and he came and he asked me what I wanted and I said "Let's put it this way, for the last five years I've been doing chief's work for second's pay and I've done it all successfully haven't I?" and he said "Yes, what do you want?" I said "Don't you think I should have chief's wages?" He said, "But aren't you getting them?" I said "No I'm not!" he said "Well you are from now on my dear" and that's how I got the rise. Well of course it made a heck of a difference to my wages naturally. I was the only one that stayed all the time with them.

Ah, that's another job I used to have to do when I was a lad, take the news to the Clifton, wait while they showed it and bring it back. Because one newsreel was used between two cinemas and I used to have to go over on a bike to the Clifton, wait there while they showed it then bring it back to the Regal. When there was the Grand National, or the Derby, or the FA football final we used to have to go to Elmdon Airport which is now Birmingham Airport and collect the snippet of the news to put in the newsreel for the Sunday night. They used to print them all and everybody used to have to go to the airport and collect it and add it into the news so that you showed it on the Sunday after the Saturday. Every, every sporting event they used to do that.

I started at the Regal, Leamington Spa as a fifth projectionist, believe it or not. And we weren’t allowed to touch a machine. We weren’t allowed to do much really except clean up and make tea for the chief projectionist. And we used to have to stand at the back of the box which we called it then, not a projection room, it used to be a box, and watch the other people and then you were allowed to take a spool out of the bottom and take it into the rewind room. Then you were eventually told how to rewind it and you had to be very slow, hold your finger on the film which burnt you, I can tell you. Then you burnt it and you had to check every joint, every V cut, everything. And then eventually in about 1942 I was allowed to take my first change-over. Because in those days the film used to come in ten minute reels and it was joined on to make 20 minute reels, and each 20 minute reels went on to a projector and then you had a dot to start the motor and another dot to change over. And you had blank film which ran through the other projector while it was on. So you had to… and first film was called My Gal Sal that I made a change-over on. And I did it right, thank goodness for that. It had to be perfect.

The chief, he only used to show the newsreel, then he used to disappear into the rest room and the second and the third projectionist used to carry on the rest of the show and he never did anything then ‘til the next time. That’s all he did. But he did make the film up.

The non-sync room where you played records had to be in a different… every room had to be separate in those days. The non-sync room was a separate room. And it had a little porthole in it that you could sort of look out into the, into the project… because you weren’t allowed into the theatre in those days. Only the chief was the only one who could look out.

And of course in those days you had carbon arcs as well which burnt away, they had to be carboned up every time, at the end of every 20 minute reel. And while I was at the Regal, Foleshill Road at Coventry they had hand-feed arcs there. And if you can imagine trying to run a show on your own, which sometimes you were on your own. On a change-over trying to feed two arc lamps up when one’s round here and the other one’s round here, it’s a bit difficult because if the things come close it gets blue, if they get apart it goes brown you see. It was just terrible really. You had a job. You used to have to sort of feed the one up hoping that it didn’t burn away enough while you’ve got enough time to lace the other projector up, rewind the film and get the dot as well to change over.

I was called up to first, not the army, I was called up to down the pits of all things, you know, as a Bevin Boy. And during that time when I was at Stoke on Trent, I worked at a cinema part time as a projectionist there in Fenton. And the funny thing there, I used to get paid in sixpences and threepenny bits. And if it was a children’s programme and we had a sort of suitable film on, but a bit long, the manager used to say, just show the toddlers one thing and then put part two on the other and change over, he said, they won’t know the difference which nobody ever did really when they were kids.

You used to have to go in the morning as well you see to clean up. I mean a projection room in the old days used to be absolutely… the floor used to be absolutely polished. ‘cause most of them were wood block floors and all lino, thick lino. They were absolutely polished to perfection, everywhere and all the passageways would all be painted red paint and… And really, you prided yourself in the job. You just, you loved doing it really. You’d check all the lamps. They’d be checked every day, all the exits and everything. Then you would clean the projectors, you’d clean the mirrors in the arc lamp. There’s lot of little jobs that you sort of did. Chat to the cleaners. But then, of course, when the show was on, you didn’t really have much time because every 20 minutes you changed over you see, not like today, you just switch a button. I mean when I worked at the MAC I could start the film and go in and watch it. Sit down and watch it! You couldn’t do that you see, unless you were the chief and somebody else was doing it. There was a lot of things. Maintenance you did, you had to maintain… all cinemas had secondary lighting which was primary batteries. You used to have to check them and check all the equipment, check the boiler house. That was another thing you used to have to do. There's lots of jobs that you sort of did which you just did naturally. Have a cup of tea, of course. You always had a cup of tea.

Rewinding the film you had grooves in your fingers winding the film. You know, it did really hurt you ‘cause you used to have to hold the film to check it all when you were making it up to make sure that the joints were all… And you didn’t have a machine to make a joint on, you used to have to scrape it with a razor blade either side and stick it down yourself. Yeah, all cement joints, yeah. They were all cement joins then. And you, if, you, you use to have to check them all, which, sometimes you didn’t check them because there was too many of them. You didn’t have time to check them. I mean, I’ve known a film come late and you’re making it up as you’re showing it. So you can't… Hadn’t much time to check it. You’re showing it on one and you’re making the next one up to put on, and then making the next up ‘cause the film’s arrived late.

I knew it was coming. It had been experimented on two or three times, but they hadn’t got it completely perfect though. But when it was perfected it did come rather quick. I must agree and the changeovers in the cinemas was very, very quick really when you think of it. I don’t think there's a multiplex in Birmingham now that could show a 35mm print. About 90% is digital now. Put a lot of people out of work really. When you think that when I started there was five projectionists for one theatre, and then there used to be three projectionists for a multiplex of about 12 screens. And now it’s one technician for a multiplex. It’s changed, hasn’t it? I used to be scared. I was really scared stiff at the MAC when I was left with the digital. I think because a lot of the controls are very small and you’re used to, sort of, dealing with a big thing and then you’re suddenly dealing with a panel this big that controls everything. I think it just sort of distracts you in a way when you’ve been for years and years looking at all this big equipment and big knobs and all that sort of thing. I got through it all right but it used to scare me a bit, I must agree, for fear I’d press the wrong buttons or something. And I never. In all fairness I thought digital, load of bunkum, you know. I thought that the quality would never, ever be as good. But I must agree, I've seen it and I've got to agree it’s not just good, it’s better. Plus the fact you don’t get all the scratches. I mean some of the Sunday stuff we used to get there was so many joints in. Well it was an insult to charge people to watch it really. Scratched and all joints and flashing all over the place. Really, really terrible.

My mother was a cinema fanatic and so Tuesday afternoons and Thursday afternoons my mother used to take me to the cinema. She was really keen on the cinema, I mean I was dragged to see so many terrible films and she used to get really annoyed with me because I used to sit or I used to kneel on the seat and look at the projection box in the cinema throughout the film. It fascinated me. Flickering lights appearing on the screen, the lights in the smoke, ‘cause smoking was pretty heavy in those days, and I just loved the atmosphere in the cinema. It just gelled with me, it was lovely. The smell of the cinema is completely … I don’t think most people recognise the smell of a cinema but I can even, even now recollect the smell of the cinema. A mix of disinfectant, ice cream, stale ice cream in cartons, you could always smell it. I used to love it.
