You came into the projection room, you did exactly the same work as a man. Exactly the same. The one day the chief came down and he said, "Right, we're on the roof today". "What roof?" "The canopy, we're cleaning all the fittings". Got the double extension ladder climbing up onto this canopy. This was Bristol Cinema. But you weren’t, honest to god you weren’t exempt from anything. Cleaning filters, and the fibreglass oh, we were like this all day, you know. Erm, banging them and then vacuuming them and blowing them out and everything. And oh, god the boilers. If there was an air bubble in the oil, you could forget it. You’ve got to get that air bubble out. And it was the old diesel to start with. I mean you were open to dermatitis with that stuff, you know, 'cause it was just like treacle. And you take it all apart and keep bleeding it until you think you’ve got the bubble out, reassemble it again with all the firing unit. Anyway, one time at the Orient we had a delivery of oil in the winter. Snowing like made but it wasn’t settling. And the manager said, "Whatever he's got on take it, because we don't know when we’re gonna get another lot, you know". Well I couldn’t see the gauge, couldn’t see it at all. So I said to him, "If I shout you stop pumping". He said, "Yes, okay". Well he was about 500 yards away and he was pumping away and my eyes, you know, glued to this thing. And I shouted "Stop! Stop!" Well, of course he couldn’t hear it because of the engine, and whoosh just like a gusher came straight over the top, I thought, "Oh no". So anyway he saw me waving me hand and he stopped it, but by then I mean we were up to our ankles in it. You know, and the smell in the theatre, of diesel oil. Thought, "What the hell can I do?" So right, the local butcher was two doors away from the cinema. And I said, "I’m in a bit of a dilemma here," I said, "can you help me out?" I said, "We’ve just had a delivery of oil and it's come over the top and it's all over the floor". He said, "Well how can I help you?" I said, "Have you got any sawdust?" And he said, "Have you got a box?" And I said, "Yes, a great big Butterkist box". He filled it up he did. Down I went and shovelling it all over the floor but of course as fast as I was putting it down it was just soaking it up. Then I’d got to get it out. So I went back again for another box. And he said, "I can't give you anymore after this, you know?" And I said, "Well I'll try. I’ll try it anyway". So I got out as much as I could but people were complaining about their eyes smarting, you see with the heat as well. I just didn’t know what to do. Hadn’t got a clue. And I thought well I can't do anything else. Nobody else was interested, management didn’t want to know, you know, "Oh it's your problem, you sort it out", like. Anyway, we eventually ... it did peter out, the smell but it took a while. I got one and landed in a booking office and never saw a train at all. So I packed that up, saw a slide at the Orient Astor and I thought, oh, I like this. Yes. I was always fond of reading history and geography. And films. And seeing places so I thought I’ll have a go so I was trainee number two. There was co-fourth, fourth, co-third, third, co-second. And the main one, Chief, I noticed he did nothing. And I thought, that’s worth striving for. He was never there and he never did anything wrong, you did. I thought, oh, thank god one day I’ll be chief. So I stuck it until I was promoted. Oh, because by that time I was chief, but I had to run everything, I had to do everything myself. So that thought of doing nothing didn’t apply. The press show of E.T, Spielberg, we had a 60 foot screen there, colossal screen. When we had the 70 mm print come of E.T., the picture was in the middle and it was blacked out either side. In other words what we call 3:4 ratio of TV. So I rang the renter up in London and I said, "You know it isn’t 70 mm print?" He said, "No but Steven Spielberg wanted it ... although it was shot on 35, shown in 70 mm because of the sound and the size of the screen. And so we had to show it like that. But for me I had to come home and say to Joan, "I'm ever so sorry, love, after 50 years of marriage, I've fallen in love with somebody else. I'm sorry". Every day I said good morning to E.T., I fell in love with it. Every time when he says, "home", tears came in my eyes. And do you know, one of the only films we’ve run at Coventry, I used to go in on the last end of it to watch the audience reaction and when he said "home" and he came, they stood up and cheered and it was like being at the theatre. And it was a houseful. But it was such a wonderful feeling that what Spielberg had made I'd shown to the public. It's that kind of feeling you get inside. You can't get it on DVD. You don't get the same feeling as being in an auditorium with the seven track sound. I was only there about three years, I didn't like it because they were what I call lousy projectionists. And the thing that finished it was I came back from being away for three days and they left me on the machines and it kept going wrong and losing the loop. So I opened the top spool box and stopped the machine, it was badly damaged and it had been and it wasn't done by me because it was up there, for me it would have to be down the bottom, they didn't realise, they hadn't enough brains to realise all that. Anyway I got on the phone and the Manager was quite short and sharp, I said "Look, when you've finished throwing your weight about remember I’m in charge in this projection room now I want a new copy here before the evening show!" Because this was in the afternoon ''Never mind about what's the matter, I want it and if you don't I'll go over your head to London!" so he did that and he came up to me and he asked what was the matter and I showed him and of course he was in on it. They wanted me out, the Manager, the so-called second chief and the doorman I think, any rate there was three of them and what they tried to do was nobody's business. Well H.C. came he was the area engineer and he said to me "I'll see you first Bart." so I went into one of our rooms up in the projection suite and he listened to me and I said "You know damn well I didn't do it" and he said "I know that my dear but I've got to question you the same as everybody else'. So he had the other two in separately of course and he came back and he sent for me again and he said "Who do you think did it?" I said "Well I'll tell you H.C.," I said "Well as far as I'm concerned they're all guilty from what I can gather they've made a right muck-up of it". So those three got the sack. The machines had to be cleaned every day because one little tiny piece of dirt on it going through the machine would scratch it. The only thing you didn't clean was the screen that had to be done by special experts but otherwise you were head cook and bottle washer of the whole blithering place. The heating, the lighting, the ventilating of the theatre, the care of the films, getting them ready and packing them away, doing all the book work for it you had to put down what condition they were in and where they came from and where you'd got to send them. And if you had a film for the first time then you rehearsed a little bit of it. Well my argument is this; if you can't do it properly don't do it at all. The only thing I ignore is housework. When you think that when I started there was five projectionists for one theatre, and then there used to be three projectionists for a multiplex of about 12 screens. And now it’s one technician for a multiplex. It’s changed, hasn’t it? I used to be scared. I was really scared stiff at the MAC when I was left with the digital. I think because a lot of the controls are very small and you’re used to, sort of, dealing with a big thing and then you’re suddenly dealing with a panel this big that controls everything. I think it just sort of distracts you in a way when you’ve been for years and years looking at all this big equipment and big knobs and all that sort of thing. I got through it all right but it used to scare me a bit, I must agree, for fear I’d press the wrong buttons or something. And I never. In all fairness I thought digital, load of bunkum, you know. I thought that the quality would never, ever be as good. But I must agree, I've seen it and I've got to agree it’s not just good, it’s better. Plus the fact you don’t get all the scratches. I mean some of the Sunday stuff we used to get there was so many joints in. Well it was an insult to charge people to watch it really. Scratched and all joints and flashing all over the place. Really, really terrible. We used to go... And I’ll talk you through it ‘cos it always makes me laugh. And Jack Spittle who was the senior projectionist at the time, the old projectionist. So we used to laugh because we used to go through this routine, we used to go... It used to be like being on a ship. It used to be “House lights to half, Mr Corfield.” “House lights to half, Mr Spittle.” And we used to take... We had little dials, knobs, that we used to take down, so we used to take the house lights to half. “Projector turn on.” “Projector turn on.” So we’d turn the projector on. But then with the take up of the film, because the film would sag, because the take up of the 12,000 foot spool wouldn’t take up quick enough. So while you were doing with one hand various things you’d have to hold the film until it took up. If you didn’t it’d snap the film. So the film would still carry on going through the gate but end up on the floor and then you’d have to stop it really quickly, and when you’d try and stop it before you obviously opened the douser, which is obviously what lets the light on the screen, and then you’d see the film. So obviously we’d open the douser, open the shutter and away we’d go, whilst taking the house lights to half. So you’d got your house lights to half, you’d run your projector, you take your spotlights down, which’d be at the front of the screen which’d be shining on the tabs, the curtains, the tabs. So then obviously what you do then is you press button, button, button, dial, dial, dial, and open it all lovely, so it’d open up with the Cannon cinemas ident as all the lights would drop down. This of course making sure the film hasn’t broken and also bringing the sound off so we hadn’t got a bang, ‘cause when a join goes through it bangs. Fading the sound down and fading the sound up. So of course once you’ve done your adverts you have to do the same thing again for your trailers, you’d bring the tabs down. You wouldn’t put your house lights up but you’d bring the tabs down and you’d bring your stage lights up to half, so you’d do that. So it’s called presentation. So we’d do all that and then we’d stop for an ice-cream sale and we’d put a spotlight on and do the ice-cream sale and then we’d start the main feature and away we’d go. So that’s what we’d do. And then we’d have to be down there five minutes from the end. We’d go down periodically and check, we’d stay there and make sure it was in the right ratio, any hair in the gate, anything like that, and you’d have to try and remove it because you couldn’t stop the show – all these little tricks that you learnt over the time. One was cinema and one was football. So therefore I got a job as a steward at West Bromwich Albion and a job in a cinema. Now, it was really strange, because my Mum had no inclination that I was interested in the cinema at all, and then when I’d got the job at the local cinema as a projectionist I went and told Mum ‘cause I was quite thrilled and Mum burst into tears and I said, “What’s the matter, Mum, it’s a steady job, it’s a...,” you know, “It’s a job, it’s something I was looking forward to doing.” And Mum said, “Well you didn’t know, but your father was a projectionist and that’s how I met him ‘cause I was an usherette.” And I hadn’t had any idea of, of this, you see. Bridget Jones’ Diary. So, now I’d never heard of it, didn’t think my wife had ever heard of it. So I went to work and they said, “Oh we’re gonna put Bridget Jones’ Diary on and the press are here.” So I sat and watched it and thought, “Haven’t a clue what that’s about,” you know, “It’s alright, I suppose, women’s film, no problem.” So I went home, like, and my missus said, “What you done today?” and I said, “Ooh not a great deal.” She went, “You’ve got Bridget Jones on tonight, haven’t ya?” I said, “Yes.” She went, “I wouldn’t mind seeing that, we haven’t been out to the cinema for a while, let’s go and see that.” So I said, “Oh okay then.” So we turned up on the night, watched Bridget Jones – packed audience – what a cracking film. Because a film is there to watch it with an audience ‘cause you cry, you laugh, you jump, you’re scared. Your 40 inch TVs, your surround sounds mean absolutely nothing, watching a well projected film on an opening night with a packed audience who are willing to enjoy it as well, you cannot get... And that’s why cinema will survive, because... that’s it, because that is the ultimate, that is. So we sat there and I laughed and it was an absolutely cracking film and I thought, “How bizarre is that, I saw it earlier on today and never rated it all, saw it with you laughing, joking, everybody laughing with it, everyone getting... you know, and thought.. So it would start, stop, it would open and close the tabs, the tabs being the curtains, bring the house lights down, bring the footlights down. And of course with automation you lost your presentation, most of your presentation, because what you did, you’d put pulse tape on it and it read the pulse tape. So you’d pin the board for what you wanted it to do: house lights down, tabs open, tabs shut if you wanted to but a lot of people stopped doing that. And then basically put a pulse at the end of the film, as soon as we saw any black, black cast come up at the end of the film we’d pulse it to bring the houselights up to half, then to full and then shut the programme down. So of course if you’ve got four... well you’d have two people on. When you got your Greta Ward automation in there was no need for that because that did it all, so then all of a sudden I was off ill and then came back and found out that two jobs had gone and the only way I could keep mine was if I would be a relief projectionist and be then for be rented out to other cinemas when people were on holiday and things like that. You could see that projectionists’ jobs were being lost through technology.
